Old Newspaper Article: There Were 100 Mi'kmaqs in Conne River-a Far Cry from 103,000
While growing up in Newfoundland, I never heard about any Mi'kmaq people from the west coast of Newfoundland. Then one day, all of a sudden a bunch of white Newfoundlanders started claiming to be Mi'kmaq. This newspaper clipping confirms for me that point. This article was sent to me by a friend. Note the quote: "there are about 100 Mi'kmaqs in Conne River Newfoundland." So now in 2023 we have over 100,000 white Newfoundlanders claiming to be Mi'kmaq. Also, I worked at the St. John's Native Friendship Centre as well, in those days we had less than 1,000 members. (if my memory serves me correctly, I think there were less than 500 members). Where were all these white Newfoundlanders who now claim to be Indigenous? They certainly were NOT coming to our little community centre.
